Louis Braille
1809-52, France

... Inventor of Braille writing.

The son of a saddler, Braille injured one of his eyes with a knife at the age of three. The second eye lost its sight because of an infection. In 1819 he entered the Parisian Institute fort he Blind where he encountered the writing system invented by Charles Barbier. This had been invented for military purposes - reading and writing were possible without light. The young Louis Braille began to examine this 12 dot system. He first reduced it to 6 dots and by 1825 the system was fully operational and is still in use.
