Hindu Wedding
18. 5. 1992

The bride had come directly from India to her wedding. This is the first time she has been abroad. She is driven straight from the airport to the 9th district.

She is a Hindu and the bridegroom is a Sikh who lives in Vienna. Why is a Sikh marrying a Hindu woman? I ask. The two of them probably know each other from childhood because an arranged marriage between a Hindu and a Sikh is not usual. There are carpets laid out on the floor, on top, an altar, garlands of flowers and sticks of incense. The wedding will be celebrated by Vienna’s only Hindu priest, his German wife assists, it is particularly nice when she blows the conch-shell horn. At the end of the ceremony the clothing of the bride and groom is tied together, they walk round a fire seven times and then they are officially married.
