DisIntegration I

EXIT

The photograph is taken from a single roll of disintegrating found footage film, a 1927 silent film production of Schnitzler’s Liebelei with the woman in the photo playing the role of Christine, the girl from the suburbs who falls in love with a man subsequently killed in a duel. Her world crumbles.

In real life she was half Jewish and, under pressure from the Nazis, gave up acting “in order to marry,” fleeing with her husband first to Switzerland and then, via England to the Pacific coast of the USA where she settled. She never took up acting again and died in 2001 Los Angeles.
Her name was Evelyn Holt.
